The Cistercian Order came to Szentgotthárd in 1183, where they serve since then. The church owns its current shapes since 1779 in baroque style. The church has the biggest bell in Western Hungary, which weighs 4.000 kilograms. Monk life ceased after the Second World War - the church currently surves for the believers as the Church named after the Holy Virgin, and the city hall is placed in the abbey. The room of the abbot is currently the office room of the city mayor, the old dinery is serving as a marriage hall.
