Ptuj Lake

The Ptuj Lake is a genuine sea on land. It was formed when the Drava River was damed below Ptuj to serve as an accumulation for the hydroelectric power plant Formin. Measuring 420 hectares, the Ptuj Lake is the biggest Slovenian permanent lake. It is 7.3 km long, in its widest part it measures 1.2 km, its maximum depth is 12 m. Along the lake there are remains of a riverine landscape, which has been protected in the framework of the Šturmovci Nature Park since 1979. It is the home of 230 bird species, among them highly endangered ones, who are dependent on the river dynamics of the rivers Drava and Dravinja. Birds also find a place to nest on the two lake islands, offering home to rare and protected bird species, such as the cormorant, the common tern, the black-headed gull and others.
